About the Artist
Karen was born and raised in Wisconsin. Drawing, painting, sculpting and basically anything to do with art has been a passion of Karen’s since she was a young child. Though she never stopped creating, she decided to study psychology in college and graduated with a Masters from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Following graduation. she worked in the field of mental health, focusing on treatment for post-traumatic stress and mood disorders. Art continued to be a part of her life and was often incorporated into therapy sessions. In 2005 she relocated to South Carolina with her husband and three children. At this time she decided to put her therapy hat on the shelf and concentrate on art. She opened a hands on studio in Lexington which allowed her to meet amazing people and encourage young children to grow in their pursuit of art. Change came again In 2009 with the blessing of a fourth child. Time restrictions compelled her to turn over her hands on studio. Though she was sad to let go of the store front, she was blessed in the end as this allowed her to devote her time to painting and creating her own work. Since that time, Karen has painted murals in local schools, participated in numerous art shows, and continues to teach children in the community. Karen was featured in the Columbia Metropolitan Airport in and was selected as one of the Artists in Residence for the South Carolina State parks in 2024.
Artist Statement
South Carolina and its beauty has been such an inspiration in my paintings. The wild life, historical buildings and churches touch me in a way that I feel compelled to capture them on canvas. From the low country to the upstate, there is never a shortage of incredible subject matter. I am so grateful to be in South Carolina during this part of my artistic journey.
