December 2016 Spotlight Artist of the Month
A native of North Carolina, Sandra Oliver has called South Carolina home since moving here in 1976. She retired from the South Carolina public schools after teaching both business and mathematics. Sandra first developed an interest in art after moving to Newberry, SC, in 1993 when she studied pastel and oil painting under Lois Funderburk, local artist and art teacher. Devoting her time to education, Sandra did not resume her art studies until mid-2011. She has studied with watermedia artist, Anna Kay Singley, Charleston watercolor artist, Audrey Montgomery, and nationally-recognized watermedia artist, Ann Hightower-Patterson. She also studied drawing with Todd Baxter. She has been juried into the South Carolina State Fair Fine Arts Exhibit, Amateur Division every year since 2011. She has also exhibited paintings in the Union County Arts Council Juried Art Show and the North Charleston Juried Art Show, and Art Flow juried art show in Allendale. “My art, whether drawing or painting, is a means of expressing my vision, thoughts and feelings in a personal way. Watercolors offered me the unique opportunity to understand color, composition, and the relationship between light and dark in a painting. The same watercolor done on two different days may look like two different paintings depending on my mood.”
