About the event

Workshop Description (from the instructor)

Join us to learn from this very in demand Charleston artist and teacher. In this workshop, Laurie will encourage students to mix hundreds of extraordinary colors with a limited palette and to use them to infuse light and shadow into their work. We will touch on composition, brushwork and design, but mostly focus on color and light.

About the Instructor

Laurie Meyer has lived and painted in Charleston for nearly forty years. Following careers as a teacher and pharmaceutical sales, Laurie devoted her focus to being a professional artist in 1997. Laurie paints in watercolor and oil and recently added gouache to her resume. No matter the medium, she seeks the resonance of light and color in all her work. Laurie is a sought out oil painting instructor and has watched many of her students become professional artists in their own right. Additionally she has led many workshops in her studio as well as Italy, Portugal, Mexico, and other wonderful locations. In 2016, Laurie opened the first Meyer Vogl Gallery in downtown Charleston with partners Marissa Vogl and Katie Geer. In December of 2021, they opened their second location on Daniel Island. Laurie's work has been accepted into shows for the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. Most recently, Laurie was awarded the "Best Use of Light" in a NOAPS show. Laurie lives in the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina with her husband Steve, studio dog, Tug, and is the mother to three daughters (including Katie Geer!) and "MorMor" to three grandchildren.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"Capturing light is a challenge and a thrill. Painting 'en plein air,' nature's studio is a luxury and a great teacher, but weather and time constraints mean I also paint in the indoor studio. Either way, my challenge is to interpret what I see and express it in my unique style.”
