Artist Bio

Roberta (Bobbi) Sorensen

Roberta (Bobbi) Sorensen began studying art in College in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, and because her goal was to teach art, she earned an undergraduate degree in Art Education from the University of Maryland. She was honored when asked to donate one of her works to the University for its permanent collection.

After graduation, Bobbi was disappointed to learn there were too many art teachers, and she had to join the job market in an area different from that which she planned. Bobbi ultimately earned a master’s degree in Political Science from the George Washington University, Washington, DC. and worked for five years on the US Senate Labor Committee, as a registered lobbyist for the College of American Pathologists, and as Executive Director of the Westchester (NY) Academy of Medicine and the Medical Society of Northern Virginia, and finally as Executive Director of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, a training institute affiliated with George Washington University. During these years she artistically limited herself to doing occasional charcoal portraits and designing and illustrating the association’s brochures, flyers, and banners.

Bobbi has served on several boards of directors, including the Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center, and Women in Government Relations. She earned a Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential which has helped her with her association work, and ultimately her art league volunteer efforts.

Bobbi semi-retired in 2014, moved to SC, and joined the Crooked Creek Art League, which she credits for stimulating her interrupted creative growth. She has served as Secretary of the Board, Chair of the Bylaws Committee, Chair of the Fall Juried Show at Still Hopes in 2019 and 2021 and is chairing the first CCAL exhibit sponsored by Friends of the Irmo Library. After finally setting up a home studio and picking up a brush, Bobbi has entered and won awards in each of the CCAL annual juried shows since she joined in 2017, including a first-place win in 2020 for the featured painting, “Street Band”.

Bobbi’s philosophy is that it is never too late, and she is making up for those years when a career interfered with her growth as an artist. She spent the first couple years in SC experimenting with different media but ultimately settled on oil and now focuses entirely on its endless possibilities. Participation in selected local shows, commissions, and volunteering with the Art League now consume Bobbi’s time. Other work can be viewed at www.bobbisorensenart.com.
